Fibromyalgia is a relatively common pain condition that affects over 10 million Americans and between 3-6% of the world’s population. It is known as an idiopathic, unknown cause, condition that consists of widespread body pain, tender muscle points, and low energy. There are various other symptoms that accompany Fibromyalgia with overlap between chronic fatigue syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome as well. This condition is quite debilitating to patients and often greatly diminishes quality of life.
- Muscle Tenderness
- Dull Pain
- Pain throughout the body
- Brain Fog / Decreased Concentration
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction
- Intestinal Dysbiosis
Fibromyalgia used to be a diagnosis of exclusion but newer guidelines have changed the criteria making it easier for doctors to diagnose. Typically, family medicine, primary care, or rheumatologists will make this diagnosis in an outpatient setting. The condition consists of chronic widespread body pain for 3 months or more with no other condition identified as the cause. Doctors must examine other conditions with similar characteristics and rule them out before making the diagnosis. Appropriate blood tests that should be considered include; CBC, CMP, ESR, Thyroid Panel, RF, and CCP Antibody Test. Once the diagnosis is made, treatment can begin. Conventional treatments typically begin with over the counter pain medications such as NSAIDS like Ibuprofen or analgesics like Tylenol. Antidepressants and Antiseizure medications are also used to lower pain sensations and help with symptom reduction. Patients that are unresponsive to these medications may be prescribed narcotic pain medications for symptom management.
Naturopathic Fibromyalgia Approaches
Naturopathic or Functional Medicine Physicians follow the same diagnostic criteria as outlined above but often run additional lab-work. This allows for a more detailed examination of contributing factors that can cause pain symptoms. Additional lab-work considerations include; micronutrient panel, vitamin D, vitamin B-12, CRP, Omega 3/6 ratio, stool analysis, and intestinal permeability markers. These labs provide a better assessment of nutritional factors, inflammatory markers, and the microbiome. We also examine the mitochondrial health for these patients, as this contributes to energy production and lowers inflammatory pain. After all contributing factors are assessed, appropriate supplement recommendations and dietary modifications can be individualized and implemented.
